Ms. Hulse was diagnosed with lupus, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, heart issues, lung issues and a multiple of health issues several years ago. She was forced to quit her teaching job when she became very ill.

But the artist inside her would not rest. So she created works documenting her fight for wellness.

Inspired by the bright palette of her native Cayman Islands and Jamaica, she paints images expressing happiness, loneliness, sadness, frustration and pain.

In her artist’s statement, Ms. Hulse says: “As an artist and art teacher, I strongly believe that the main purpose of arts is for healing; it makes life a more pleasant experience. Art enriches the daily lives of everyone. My goal is to create paintings that will nourish, delight and fill the mind and hearts of all who sees it, with a sense of wonder and deep thoughts. Holding a brush in my hand becomes an extension of something within, a pouring out of myself, for the world to see and hopefully assist those in need. Doing that might make me vulnerable in a sense, but my painting is really a wanting to give of myself.”

The exhibit is a one-woman show and will run 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 at Alicea’s Martial Arts, 1884 Highway 1 in Rockledge. Call 321-305-4921.
